Irl L. Therit, Jr., 63, of Hanover, passed away at WellSpan York Hospital at 3:11 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, according to a release by the coroner's office.
Deputy Coroner Molly York was called to the hospital to investigate and certify the death.
Therit, was struck by his "rollback" flatbed truck parked at his property in the 3500 block of Centennial Road at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, as detailed in the release. He had parked his truck, which had a manual transmission, and was struck when he walked to the rear of the vehicle, because "the truck's brake did not hold, causing the truck to strike Therit," as stated in the release.
He suffered "critical injuries" and "was airlifted from the scene to Wellspan York Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries less than 2 hours after the incident," the coroner wrote.
There was no autopsy, but a routine toxicology test was performed.
Irl loved cars, owning and operating his Therit's Auto Repair, for 40 years, according to his obituary posted on the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc, website. He spent countless hours at Lincoln Speedway, "where he relished the thrill of the sport," as written in his obituary.
He was known for his playful sarcasm, having a knack for storytelling, and having an infectious laugh, according to his obituary.
Irl is survived by his wife of 40 years Denise M. (Wonder) Therit, his daughters, Tracy Hull of Hanover and Kelly Therit of York; his sons, Brian Therit of Hanover and Joshua Therit, along with his companion Laken Tolbert, of Hanover; and his sisters, Tina Shultz of New Oxford, Jody Therit of New Oxford, Lori Therit of New Oxford, and Beth Therit, along with her companion Dave Lake of Dover; numerous grandchildren and extended family members, as detailed in his obituary.
A celebration of Irl's life will be held at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory located at 549 Carlisle St., Hanover at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
